Idle game meaning, in one sentence

An idle game is a game that plays itself while you are away: production keeps running, and your job is to decide what to buy, upgrade or automate next. "Idle" means "doing nothing", and that is the joke of the genre: you progress even when you do nothing. They are also called idle clicker games, incremental games or simply idlers.

How idle games work

  1. You start by hand. You click, tap or collect something yourself: a cookie, a monster, a piece of trash.
  2. You buy producers. Buildings, workers or machines do the job for you, faster than you ever could.
  3. The game keeps going without you. Most idle games keep earning while you are away, so coming back is a reward.
  4. You choose what comes next. The real game is in the decisions: which upgrade, which producer, what to automate.
  5. You prestige. At some point you reset on purpose to earn a permanent bonus, and go much further on the next run.

Idle, incremental, clicker: the words players use

  • Idle game: stresses progress while you are away.
  • Incremental game: stresses numbers that keep growing and new systems that unlock. More in what incremental games are.
  • Clicker game: starts with clicking before automation takes over.
  • Prestige (or ascension, rebirth): a reset you choose, for a permanent bonus.
  • Offline progress: what the game earns while it is closed.
  • Number go up: how players sum up the pleasure of the genre.

How we picked

This guide is written by the team behind Garbage Growth, an idle / incremental game on Steam. We kept games that:

  • Steam players rate well (official Steam review summary, checked on October 18, 2026);
  • you can still get today, on Steam or in the browser;
  • each bring something different, so the list is not ten copies of the same game.

Garbage Growth is our game. When it appears in a list it is marked Our game, and you can check its Steam reviews yourself. No studio paid to be on this page.
